Raindance, I know exactly what you mean. When my father died, I didn't cry at his service, I didn't cry when my brother called me - but about a week later I just broke down and sobbed. I still have bouts of unexpected sobbing over various peoples' deaths on occasion, I've even been known to break down over my grandmother's death and that was 41 years ago. I had a rough time of it growing up and she was the only person who I felt "had my back".

This was heartbreaking. Robert Carlyle is an exceptional actor, and this scene REALLY shows how well he plays emotion.

I had a similar experience with a therapist. I'd seen her for years, and in all honesty was thinking we were coming to the end of our time together anyway - I was finding it hard to come up with stuff to talk about. So one session I told her I'd discovered I had dacryphilia - and she didn't know what that was! I explained it to her as best I could, but after that I lost faith in her competence and we stopped not very long after.

You and your family are in my thoughts. And I understand about movie scenes and songs - Lately I can't sing along with a bunch of songs I love because they make me teary, and singing is one way I comfort myself when I'm feeling low.

How about crying because of pain, which prevents you from looking after a disabled husband, which could mean he has to move out to an assisted care facility? Because we're in that space right now.

I can tell you that adults - specifically me - DO cry from physical pain. I've been having back, hip and knee problems for the past few days, and last night it got so bad I could not sleep at all. I got maybe two hours of sleep, tops, and the pain had me in tears multiple times, this even after taking aspirin, Aleve, Tylenol, a hot bath and using liniment at various times during the night.

I can remember being belittled as a kid by my mom when I cried, and of course hearing "I'll give you something to cry about!" if I didn't stop immediately.

You are describing how I've been feeling the last few weeks with all the stress in my life. I want to cry in huge, sobbing gasps, but can't seem to get it out.

I finally was able to do that a couple days ago when I lost my work lanyard, which had the keys to my file cabinets at work. I obsessive-thought-ed myself into a panic attack, thinking my boss would be horribly angry/disappointed/upset with me, and I can't BEAR to have anyone be unhappy with me. (It all goes back to growing up - when my mother was upset with me her wrath was a thing to be feared, so I spent all my time making sure she was placated. As a result, I live my life making sure everyone else is happy/content/placated and live in terror of that ever changing.)

The panic attack seems to have cleared out a lot of the anxiety I was feeling, so I'm calmer now. Things are still in a mess, but the future is looking a bit brighter.

I'm with you, flatter. If I hear someone vomit, see it, or smell it, I'll do it. Even a cat with a hairball can set me off.
