Career Choice

I'm not sure if anyone else here thought about this when they were younger, but I definitely considered being a counselor/psychologist/grief specialist for a while.  Probably had to do with the fact that I thought all of my sessions would be like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRB-9vMjjzQ   (start watching 34:17, takes a little while but there's a great scene toward the end).

However, turns out that's totally not how counseling/psychiatry works.

Anybody else toss around those career choices?  If so, why did you decide against them? If not, how come? Just curious

Re: Career Choice

That was a lovely scene! I also entertained the idea of being a psychologist. I think I would have been good at it, but I also felt a little weird knowing that I would be aroused on some level by my patients' tears.

Re: Career Choice

I've long thought I'd be a good counselor.  Oddly enough, being around people in tears in real life doesn't affect me the same way seeing them on TV or in movies does - I think because in real life, I'm so focused on their feelings I don't have time to fully enjoy my own.

Re: Career Choice

I highly recommend watching the whole series.  I started watching Flashpoint in October, and have finished all 5 seasons.  Great show!

Re: Career Choice

I discovered my fetish when I was already enroled at college, so it never occurred to me to change my career path just because I'd discovered a new fetish.  Many years later, I realized that my crying/comforting needs weren't being met (which only seemed to intensify my fetish), but I could never have predicted that outcome years ago.

In a period of frustration, yes, I did consider pursuing psychology as a career.  But the amount of education required to enter the field and looking at the reality of it ultimately deterred me.  When I look at the list of issues that counselors deal with, there are really only a few I feel comfortable with.  I would definitely not do well as a social worker.  Some issues even make me feel unsafe.  And even if I could be picky, the chances that the right type of guy would come into my office with the right type of problem?  Honestly, not that great!  Sure, it could happen, but... not worth the rest!!

I actually trained for something once that would have been a volunteer position which could have resulted in me seeing/hearing more tears and being a comfort.  However, intimidation got the best of me and I did not take the position.  I guess it just wasn't right for me.  But from that experience, I learned more about who I am and what my interests really are.

Re: Career Choice

never came into consideration, and my career choice has nothing to do with my fetish at all, although every once in a while you do get to see an athlete get teary eyed every so often.  Maybe if I worked the Olympics I would get to see some, but not so much in basketball or baseball, plus I'm not into men crying
