Tom Pelphrey is currently getting notice for co-starring as director Joseph Mankiewicz in Mank,
But earlier this year he blew me away a "white trash" schizophrenic in the 3rd season of Ozark.
The difference between these characters is immense, and MAN, can this guy cry. Tears and sobbing that are so authentic it's scary.
Here are two scenes from Ozark where the character is deeply in crisis:

3.9:

Indeed, he's top notch as far as i've seen in those clips. I hope he'll have some more in other films as well....What episodes are these scenes from?
Edit : I found out the episode for the part in the second clip. It's called Fire Pink and it's episode 9 from the 3 rd season. The episode starts with him in a car arguing with a driver, his eyes fill with tears as he narrates a sad wartime story, at times he's withholding his tears and his chin trembles and then he gets flushed and some tears roll down his cheeks. It's almost magical. Then at around 30 :00 minutes he's in the front seat with Laura Linney, he's very distraught while eating some fries. When he starts sobbing he drops the fried potatoe on his shirt, Linney touches his face to console him and then he resumes eating after he wipes his eyes..

Those two Ozark Scene are indeed absolutely remarkable. As you say Squonk, it is so authentic it is scary. And mostly you dont see a guy sob so openly (mostly is the single man tear).
The last time I rememberd to hear a guy weep so unconsolably was a crying scene from a soap opera that kept stuck in my head.
I just looked it up, and funny, its the same actor: Tom Pelphrey in Guiding Light. So he really is a natural!

I'm revisiting his stuff and oh my god. There really ought to be awards for crying, because he deserves one! In the DOJ facility scene, the tiny whimpers he makes just before he covers his face near the end hurt so much to hear.

So sorry I am late coming back to this post. Thank you all SO much for the additional scenes. I am even more impressed with the phenomenal Tom Pelphrey and can not wait to see his future work. As for his past work, well, I had no idea he had already a gut-wrenching crying scene under his belt (that "Guiding Light" scene was INTENSE).

New scene with the incredible Mr. Pelphrey: "Outer Range" (Amazon Prime), end of episode 5.
More subdued than "Ozark", but great tears and I love how he struggles to keep his voice under control:
