When I feel like I need to cry but can't, I usually listen to songs that I find sad, and that makes me finally be able to cry. And you must be wondering what songs are these that can make me cry like a baby, and I want to present four songs in Portuguese. Even if you don't understand ANYTHING, I think that if you look for the translation of these lyrics, you will understand why I find these tracks so heavy. I'm talking about four songs by a Brazilian band called "Legião Urbana" (Urban Legion) from the 80s/90s. Even though I was born in 2005, I can't deny that this band is one of the biggest in Brazil and is still hugely recognized to this day.
These four songs are:
Vento No Litoral (Wind on the Coast): This song was written for the love of the band's lead singer's, he ended up dying, and the vocalist wrote a song in his honor. The song talks about how he goes to the beach and starts thinking about him. He says things like "What I miss the most is our plans", "Where are you now besides here inside me?", "It's going to be hard without you, because you're with me all the time", "Since you're not here, what I can do is take care of myself".
A Via Láctea (Milky Way): The band's lead singer had AIDS, and he knew he was going to die because of it. And this song was recorded in the last months of his life, and he was already feeling tired and weak, and you can hear this in the tone of voice with which he sings the song. The song talks about how everything is lost, and that there is no way to solve it. He says "Today the sadness is not temporary, today I had a fever all afternoon", "I don't even know why I feel this way, suddenly a sad angel comes near me", "Don't pay me any attention, but thank you for thinking of me".
Love In The Afternoon (yeah the name is already in English): This is definitely one of the three saddest songs I've ever heard. And if you've ever lost someone you love very much, you'll agree with me. The song talks about the grief of someone who has lost a loved one, and who, even though they are living their normal life, still misses them a lot. The song has lyrics like: "It's so strange, the good die young. So it seems to me when I remember you, gone too soon.", "I'm still here, my work and my friends, and I remember you on days like this, rainy days, sunny days", "Go with the angels, go in peace. It was like that every afternoon, the discovery of friendship", "I remember the afternoons we spent together, it's not always, but I know you're fine now"
And finally, maybe the saddest song I've ever heard, "Clarisse": This song was recorded together with Via Láctea, and several others, which were separated into two albums. One with the songs that were most worth releasing, and it was the last album released with the vocalist still alive. And another that was released after this one. But, this one, was released after the death of the vocalist (yes, he died of AIDS). And this one had songs that were considered too heavy to be on the other one, like Clarisse. The vocalist and songwriter didn't want to release it because he was afraid of encouraging teenagers to commit suicide, but they released it anyway. The song is about Clarisse, a 14-year-old girl who has a horrible life, and is just a few steps away from death. This song hurts me so much, because my teenage years were difficult, just like hers. I also went through things like what this fictional girl went through. The song says extremely painful things, like: "I'm tired of being vilified, misunderstood and discarded. Those who say they understand me never wanted to know", "That boy was admitted to a clinic, they say due to lack of attention from his friends", "And Clarisse is locked in the bathroom, and she makes marks on her body with her little pocketknife. Lying on the floor, her ankles bleed.", "And the pain is less than it seems, when she cuts herself she forgets that it is impossible to have calm and strength in life", "One of her friends is already gone, when another police incident", "The fear of walking home at night, the men who rub themselves disgustingly, on the way to and from school", I am a bird, they lock me in a cage, and they still want me to sing like before", "I am a bird, they lock me in a cage, but one day I can resist, and I will fly along the most beautiful path.", "Clarisse is only 14 years old."
Wow, that was long. But tell me, what are the songs that make you cry? I'll look for them and see if I also find them sad, and honestly, I recommend these songs to you, listen to them, and you'll see that they really are no small thing. A big hug.
