I definitely feel this. I sometimes have a hard time witnessing others cry in real life for this reason.

Conversely, then, have you ever comforted someone in front of others and enjoyed knowing that they were witnessing it? Almost like comforting exhibitionism?

It definitely was my first major opportunity to openly indulge in some of my most important and personal fantasies. Too much lost time.

I tend to worry about that, because I'm afraid that the time will finally come to get to hold my boyfriend while he cries and he'll feel my heart pounding and get really weirded out by me.

I had worries like that once, but I found that they tend to go away in the moment.

I can only recall one occasion where a nightmare actually caused me to jolt out of sleep like that, back when I was a teenager. Oddly enough, though, I find that I sort of enjoy them. They play out like a surrealist horror movie in which I get to be the protagonist.

That sounds rather torturous and tantalizing. I hope you'll get a chance to really experience it.

What appeals about it? The vulnerability? The show of fear?

Idk if this counts as a fantasy or not, but I had a dream last night. Probably been watching too much Game of Thrones because I dreamed that I was comforting Sansa Stark over something or other. First, she had some tears running down her cheeks, then I hugged her close and she opened up into deep, wracking belly sobs. Not sure what it was all about, though.

Either a twinge of jealousy or else a feeling that you might be provoking it in someone else by sharing a crying moment with someone?

I just thought of a time in school when I came across a friend of mine trying to console his girlfriend. I don't know what upset her, but they were sitting together at the end of a dormitory hall and she was weeping.  I asked if she was alright and she stood up and came over to hug me (we were all mutual friends) and cry on me for a minute.

It was great to experience, but it also made me feel a bit awkward to be sharing what was, for me, a very intimate moment with his girlfriend in front of him. I very much doubt that he felt the same way about it that I did, but I wonder what it would have been like if he did.

On the other side of the equation, I've at times asked one or another of my lovers to save her tears for me, as best she could, because they were so sacred to me.

Have others felt this?

I recall once playing board games with a group of friends and saying something that made everyone crack up. I mean, incapacitated with laughter for a couple minutes, especially the girl to my right. I could pinpoint a change in her vocal tone, the exact instant she went from laughter to laugh-sobbing, with her hands cupped over her face and her fingers wiping away tears.

I thought, "huh, so that's what she sounds like when she cries."

After that, she thanked me for making her and the whole table of people cry.

I've often tried to gauge how a woman would cry by observing how she laughed. I'd say they're connected.
