On the plane today, got caught in severe turbulance. My wife burst into tears, and so did the pretty woman sitting on the other side. No running tears that I could detect, but visible tears in eyes and both had curled lips. The lady on the other side was hyperventillating even after the storm passed.

Long time without obs, thanks for sharing. Is this the first time she experienced turbulence? Did you wipe or kiss her tears? Did you comfort her or calm her down? Were there any witnesses you noticed?

Heh, I've had a tiny amount of observations for the past few years, and I got too lazy to post them.
Yes, it was the first time flying in a small, domestic aircraft. I held her the whole time, while stealing glances at the other woman. My wife was going "I'll never see my kids again!"
The other woman was sobbing and praying. She was definitely more traumatized by the experience. She had that "shellshocked" look the rest of the flight.
The flight itself was about 30 mins in the air, including takeoff and landing.

Valid reactions from both of them. Turbulence on small planes is scary as hell.

Have you ever cried in a similar situation?

Hi Truffle, long time no see. Yes, in hindsight it was scary. My dumbass though we were landing and this was normal.

Yeah I do. Mild brief turbulence doesn’t bother me. Also if the pilot anticipates the turbulence and warns us beforehand, then even heavy turbulence doesn’t bother me because I knew to expect it. But if there’s severe, prolonged, unexpected turbulence then I will cry. The most recent time, we were on our return flight home and it was extremely windy at our home airport. We were descending and nearly about to land, we could clearly see the runway, but then the plane started shaking and suddenly we got slammed in our seats and the plane rapidly started ascending again and we were back up high in the air. The pilot came on and said it was way too windy to land and we were going to circle the airport until it was safe. My sister in law and my stepdaughter and I initially reassured each other even though we were all nervous. Then like 20 minutes later the pilot said we may need to divert to a different airport and they were weighing their options. Then the plane started shaking again and we couldn’t hold it together anymore and simultaneously burst into tears, and we weren’t the only ones. Fortunately like 10 minutes later he was able to land the plane but we were so stressed we continued to cry for another 10 minutes.
My sister has actual flight anxiety so she avoids flying when possible. She cries during takeoff and the initial climb, but she’s fine once at cruising altitude.
