Heard a man cry today

I guess this counts as an observation, except I heard the crying but didn't actually see the person. I was in my office getting some work done, and while I was focused on what I was doing, I was aware of the background noise of people talking and doing things in the hallway. I heard a man swear under his breath, but I didn't think much of it. But then, I heard a loud gasp, and I assumed it was a laugh, since there had been a group of people laughing right outside my door just moments prior.

However, after I heard several more similar gasps, I realized it was actually a man crying. I heard several deep, vocalized intakes of breath, and then three or four vocalized sobs. This went on for about 15 seconds, and I was ready to get up and make sure he was alright and see if he needed any help. Just when I was about to get up, though, the sobs stopped, and it was quiet in the hallway, so he must have walked away. Of course, that left me with my imagination running wild about what he was sobbing about, what he looked like, etc.

And there's my sort-of obs for today! I haven't had many crying episodes or observations lately, except for one a couple weeks ago when I teared up for a moment over an emotional memory. I shed two or three tears, and my breath was quiet but jagged for about ten seconds. I'm sure my lip was also distorted, although I don't know if it progressed into a full lip bulge. I also teared up while watching a movie yesterday -- a single tear rolled down my cheek and dripped down onto my neck, and I left it there for about a minute before wiping it away.

Re: Heard a man cry today

Interesting obs.  Do you work in a type of environment where crying would be expected?

"...men do not cry. They will do anything BUT cry. They stop themselves crying. And eventually they do cry if it is bad enough. So that's how you know with a man how bad it is for him. Because he would've stopped himself...Men always cry like that. They don't cry and in the end they do and if they do then it's overwhelming." ~Michael Caine

Re: Heard a man cry today

I don't know about expected, but I work in the arts, and it seems that emotional reactions are fairly more frequent and acceptable than in other places I've worked. This is the first time I've heard someone actually cry there, though (except for the one time I saw a female colleague cry, but that wasn't during work hours).
