About a month ago I went to a retrospective of Japanese films from the 50s at an arthouse theater near my apartment. A cute late-20s-ish guy that I recognized from other screenings sat a few rows down from me and a little off to my left. (There were probably about 15 people in the theater altogether.)
During a sad scene near the end of the film, I heard some sniffling coming from his direction and I glanced over and noticed that he was leaning on his armrest with the hand closest to me pressed up to the side of his face -- as if he was hiding his eyes from view. After the lights came up, as I was putting my coat on and getting my things together, I noticed that he wiped under each eye, one at a time, with the knuckles of his index fingers. Then, (this was my favorite part) he kind of put his whole face into his hands and wiped both cheeks with his palms.
He was still sitting in the theater when I left.
I actually saw him again at another movie a week or so later (a comedy), and he gave me this small, almost embarrassed looking smile as he was getting seated.
Not much to it. But it was nice, mostly because it was so unexpected.

Nice! I assume however you didn't quite see any evidence of tears? Interesting that he gave you an embarrassed smile when you saw him again - he must have realised you noticed him crying.

Hi, Tearhunter. I didn't see any evidence of tears -- I wish I had. I was at the wrong angle and I suppose I was trying to be inconspicuous.
I'm not sure whether he actually saw me notice him crying or just assumed I must have seen, maybe neither of these. Honestly, I'm probably just reading too much into the situation, as someone with my/our proclivity might tend to do.

Pale skin, short brown hair. The kind of preppy hipster look that is pretty common in young cinephiles -- wool coat, sweater with a collared shirt and tie underneath. (There's a bar in the lobby of the theater and I remember noticing that he was drinking a whiskey or a scotch.)
