Oh, very interesting! I have seen the Steven Spielberg and Adrien Brody speeches multiple times each, and they are indeed both very touching.
I noticed a lack of Colin Firth in the chart. I guess his voice getting "thick" at the end of his 2011 Oscar speech wasn't the same as a voice "crack."

Watching Firth's speech again, I think he definitely could have earned a blue dot. I guess it just goes to show how subjective these things can be.
It's nice to have all the videos in one place; I had never seen the Adrien Brody one before -- very sweet.

Brody is my favorite current American actor (you should watch The Pianist, by the way, as there are several instances in it of him either weeping openly or tearing up), and the thing I love most in his speech -- besides the ending -- is when he picks up speaking after some prolonged applause, and both his voice and his lower lip are trembling.
As for Spielberg, I love the moment when he's talking about never having held an Oscar statuette before, his voice falters on the word "hand," and he sort of acknowledges it by putting his own hand to his mouth. It's rather cute.
Incidentally, Tristana -- do you know what Firth is saying just after he says that about having to attend to some "impulses backstage"? (The bit I'm referring to is the very last line of the whole speech.) His voice is so thick there that I've never been able to make out the words.

Hallie Berry is the one that most comes to mind when I think of crying Oscar recipients. Also of interest is people in the audience who tear up during a speech

I need to watch The Pianist at some point. (Ironically -- or maybe not -- as much as I enjoy movies and crying, I don't always have the easiest time with really harrowing stories. I guess I'm still working myself up to it.)
I totally agree with you about the Spielberg clip -- "hand" is the highlight.
I also have no idea what Colin Firth says there -- I just watched the clip again a few minutes ago, and I feel like the more times I hear it, the more mysterious it gets.
My best guess at the moment is that it's a belatedly remembered thank you: "Thank you very much. Thank you, ???? ????" and that the part we can't make out is a name.

Hi, Reptongeek. I feel like crying in the audience has definitely become more common in the past few years. In particular, the best song performances seem like they tend to generate a lot of great reaction shots.

Didn't Lady Gaga's song cause a few teary moments. I couldn't watch the ceremony but I heard rumours that there were

Actually, I've just noticed that Colin's voice, even before it gets "thick," gets shaky, and I believe it does crack a bit on one word. So yeah, I feel he could have been in the chart.
