Brody is my favorite current American actor (you should watch The Pianist, by the way, as there are several instances in it of him either weeping openly or tearing up), and the thing I love most in his speech -- besides the ending -- is when he picks up speaking after some prolonged applause, and both his voice and his lower lip are trembling.

As for Spielberg, I love the moment when he's talking about never having held an Oscar statuette before, his voice falters on the word "hand," and he sort of acknowledges it by putting his own hand to his mouth.  It's rather cute.

Incidentally, Tristana -- do you know what Firth is saying just after he says that about having to attend to some "impulses backstage"?  (The bit I'm referring to is the very last line of the whole speech.)  His voice is so thick there that I've never been able to make out the words.

I need to watch The Pianist at some point. (Ironically -- or maybe not -- as much as I enjoy movies and crying, I don't always have the easiest time with really harrowing stories.  I guess I'm still working myself up to it.)

I totally agree with you about the Spielberg clip -- "hand" is the highlight.

I also have no idea what Colin Firth says there -- I just watched the clip again a few minutes ago, and I feel like the more times I hear it, the more mysterious it gets.

My best guess at the moment is that it's a belatedly remembered thank you: "Thank you very much. Thank you, ???? ????" and that the part we can't make out is a name.

It almost sounds as if he's saying either "I'm very fond of you" or something with the word "pardon" in it (though I don't know if even Colin Firth is quite that formal!).

The Pianist, besides being very sad, is pretty graphic in spots, so I don't blame you for being wary.  Were it not for Brody, in fact, I feel the film (great as it is) would have little warmth to it; nearly all of the really tender moments come about because of him.

I can definitely hear "pardon" now that you mention it.

There's a guy on Youtube who agrees with us, so it could well be.

Oh, Colin, you're such a classy English gentleman!
