Oh yes, I saw this movie in the theater (twice) and remember those moments as very effective. 

Another touching Hugh Jackman moment from Les Mis is the one where he's comforting the dying Fantine and keeps whispering "shhh" (as in, hushing her gently).  It's very tender.

I posted the Eddie scene last year.  It's perfection.  And as a singer I'm amazed at his ability to song whole crying.  That's hard!
